Walking stubbornly on the thread of life which follows the infinite tapestry of the Universe, the artist’s large gesture gets firmer, stands for itself, takes off and lands with all the maturity of the experienced human being who imposes himself, but also with all the clarity of mind characteristic of the ‚fairy eye‘ through which children see our world – looking away from the worst, retaining only the fragrance of the beautiful, of hope, of  the very best.

Unconstrained by the limits of Cartesianism, this magic invents a territory of absolute and possibility free from any concession and temporality. Out of it surges a pictural writing as much rooted in the earth’s pigments as perfumed by glittering ether.

At the heart of Jamal Lansari’s paintings is a nature imbued with colorist light, scattered with informal and moving material, studded with symbolic objects and graphic lines full of lyrism - subtle narratives through which one may travel and interact with others. They distill their sacred essence on each parcel of the canvas in order to compose chapters of a wordless philosophical tale. For, after all, isn’t painting „mute poetry‘ as Paul Gauguin liked to put it when he was part of the Nabis – meaning „prophets‘ – movement.

The painter dares transgress the real, while at the same time exposing its substance through symbolist figurative take-offs. He thus expresses his reinvented perception of the world – an abysmal and prophetic intuition taking the form of a dove.

Since the dawn of the greatest civilisations, this immaculate bird has flown over both the East and the West, harrowing with its metaphors its oldest spiritual myths. And everywhere, it stands for purity, hope, good, peace, love, the sacred spirit or the soul. Here the painter ties to its paw a message stating that observing humanity through the toughest lenses of its multi-faceted actuality is tantamount to reading the most shocking newspaper headlines. The winged messenger then wounds itself against the most stifling battlements of our mass-media society.

In one painting, the dove flies away and tries to join the peacefulness of the kingdom of angels. In another, a crouching bird remains still, facing the setting, unable to see that its cage has disappeared - as though freedom were no longer part of its essence. In yet another one, the bird is being pierced by arrows and one cannot but think that it epitomises the martyr of the soul, of the sanctified spirit, or rather the shattered hopes of peace and good. The painter’s works dramatise the impact that the endless flow of scarier and scarier news has on the individual.

Thus, they create a space of esoteric reflexion on the human being condition and its intelligence as constrained by societal contemporary structures. They end up forming a pictural legend where empathy is needed in order to transcend this patchwork of sensible thoughts. But how? The answer is almost a synonym for „art“ for the painter who thinks in forms and colours. Muses provide him with their influences and he seizes them naturally, never contemplating resisting them without resisting himself. That it how he is, made up of this material which inhabits him and which he transposes in his works – a material whose impulsions beat like a heart too big to contain the love that has been breathed into it. Discovering other paintings, one may even recognise the face of Eros, who will pin down the incarnation of Good and Ideal at the summit of the chassis, as though it were a smile. This pictural taste for Antiquity opens up a window onto the contemporary world, providing the works with a pluricultural and evocative iconography whose ethical prologue is the representation of the Idea – see for instance the series „Freedom Birds“ flapping their wings over hope.

To all this adds up a plastic deepness achieved by the use of incipient perspectivist swathes of colour associated with material effects. This creates a link between what is close and what is far away, between the telluric and the cosmic, between what can be said and what cannot, between the visible and the invisible. The artist’s paintings explore different levels of reading, just as the two messenger crows of the Nordic god Odin explore from dawn to dusk the nine worlds and their levels of consciousness.

Through his work, the artist sketches an interior odyssey galvanised by sensual correspondences which fly over the canvas, like Horus flying over Ancient Egypt.
